Demon Page 7

  “I-I mean…”

Takeshi smiled at him easily and stroked a hand through his messy hair. “I know what you meant,” he said softly. “I’m already in pretty deep when it comes to you, too. Who knew I’d ever see a human as more than a meal?”

Kieran rolled his eyes. “Glad to hear your standards are so high.”

“Seriously, though,” Takeshi murmured as he lowered his hand to hold Kieran’s still warm cheek. “If I didn’t have you, I would have given up to that energy sucking knife a lot sooner. I need you.”

Takeshi leaned down to kiss him, but Kieran grabbed his face and pulled him in the rest of the way. It was sloppy and passionate, and even though Takeshi couldn’t feed off Kieran’s energy right now, he could still feel the way it sang under him.

It seemed the only reason Kieran ended up letting him go was his need to breathe oxygen to survive. Kieran had a light frown on his face now, but Takeshi assumed the associated feelings weren’t directed at him since Kieran was looking over to the side. He stayed silent, giving Kieran time to think about what he wanted to say.

“What are we going to do if Chevonne, or someone else in the group, makes another attempt at you?” he asked quietly. “The lessons are useful, but I don’t like being around them if it means they still see you as a target.”

Takeshi shrugged one shoulder. “What are we going to do if a stronger demon makes an attempt at me? I can stay here in your apartment as much as possible to avoid giving anyone the opportunity, but eventually someone will get curious about why something like me is spending so much time around a single human.” Takeshi didn’t want to admit it, but he needed to bring it up. “Maybe it’s better if I don’t?”

Kieran’s limbs tightened around him again, as though he was worried Takeshi was going to get up and walk out right then and there. “Those crackpots keep saying they want me to reach my potential, right? Training me is in their interests as far as keeping you under control goes. Maybe I can become strong enough to get rid of any demons that’ll try to hurt you, too?”

“Maybe you can,” Takeshi replied thoughtfully. “But I think even you would struggle to take on a prince, or the king himself.”

Kieran raised a brow as he processed the new information. “We’ll just have to try and stay under the radar then, won’t we?” He adopted a cheeky expression. “As long as you can manage to control yourself, we should be fine.”

Takeshi snorted, a habit he was sure he’d picked up from Kieran. “I’m sorry, which one of us is always giving the booty calls?”

Kieran gave him a smirk fit for a demon and wrapped his legs around his waist. “Yes, but I don’t invite you over for dinner. It’s not my problem if you can’t control your appetite.”

“I’ll make it your problem,” Takeshi muttered as he pinned Kieran’s hands to the mattress above his head.

Kieran tried to keep a serious expression as he waggled his eyebrows at Takeshi’s suggestion, but wasn’t able to stop himself from laughing. Takeshi smiled at the sound of his unrestrained joy.

He could forget the danger long enough to share a moment of happiness with Kieran.
